In Akure, Ondo State’s capital, a suspected kidnapper who kidnapped a six-year-old girl from her mother’s car at a grocery shop was caught while attempting to withdraw some of the ransom money.
To free the girl, the suspect had asked for N50 million.
It was discovered that the suspect abducted the girl in Akure’s Lafe Area when the girl’s mother was out doing some grocery shopping in her Toyota Corolla.
According to a statement given to newsmen in Akure on Saturday by SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the police public relations officer (PPRO), Ondo State Command, the girl’s mother, Mrs. Chukwu-Ezedima, reported her daughter’s kidnapping on December 21, 2022, at 9:00 p.m.
According to Odunlami-Omisanya, the suspect was detained on December 31, 2022, at a POS terminal while attempting to withdraw some of the purported N50 million ransom demand from the family.
She remained silent on the extent of the ransom payment.
The victim was saved uninjured and the suspect confessed to the crime during questioning.
The police spokeswoman announced that the culprit would be soon be charged in court.
According to the police spokesperson, the Nigerian Army also gave the police a man who had been detained for illegally carrying firearms.
During a regular check at Elegbeka in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area, a Nigerian Army patrol, according to Odunlami-Omisanya, learned of a man (names withheld) who was purportedly carrying a revolver.
She claimed that after looking into the claim, the patrol team detained the man in possession of the locally-made firearm.
“Although the suspect initially claimed that he discovered the rifle on a farm, he later admitted that a welder who is currently incarcerated in an Okene correctional facility had actually provided it to him.
The Police PPRO continued, “The suspect has been turned over to the Police and will soon have his day in court.”
